U Starého Chřestýše

A round display in a 3D-printed body plus a web board that tell you, tongue in cheek, whether the kiosk is open. State flows over a REST API — and if the display knows the PIN, a button press on it flips the sign too.

PURPOSE

Open or closed?

A simple, playful way to tell whether the U Starého Chřestýše kiosk is open right now — on the web and on the counter, without anyone having to look it up.

SOLUTION

Web + display on one API

The server is PHP 8 on SQLite: a single-page board you edit in place after entering a PIN — opening hours, one-off closures, dated events and a “western” sign with a custom message. The hardware is an ESP32-C3 Super Mini with a round 1.28″ GC9A01 (240×240) in a 3D-printed body; every few seconds it polls /api/status and shows open or closed. Wi-Fi, URL and PIN are set through a captive portal. When the display knows the PIN, a short button press sends POST /toggle, making control two-way; without it the display only consumes the state.
